Home About ASG Overview

Preamble of the ASG Constitution

In the belief that the students have the right, as well as the obligation, to play a clearly defined and significant role in the formation and application of institutional policy affecting both academic and student affairs, and in the belief that a democratic student government is the best means by which this role may be played—We the students of Miami University hereby create the Miami University Associated Student Government.

The Structure

Associated Student Government has a three-branch structure similar to that of our Federal Government with some characteristics of a parliamentary system.

  1. The Executive Branch - consists of the Student Body President and the entire Executive Cabinet. These individuals are responsible for the day to day operations of the Associated Student Government.  Each Cabinet member oversees its own committee that is filled with a variety of students from all over campus.

Campus Activities Council - By planning campus events, this council has created many extraordinary traditions at Miami.  CAC plans Homecoming, Kidsfest, Parent’s Weekend, Springfest, and many more. They have also brought concerts and performances by Dave Matthews Band, MTV Campus Invasion, Jay Leno, 50 Cent, John Mayer, Bill Cosby, Dave Chappelle, Girl Talk—and they continue to impress us by bringing even more people in ever year!

Academic Affairs Council – Working with the Miami Faculty and Administration to address academic issues, this council improves every student’s Miami education.

Diversity Affairs Council – DAC helps promote cultural and intellectual diversity on campus.  They plan A.W.E.S.E.O.M.E. WEEK (Awareness Week: Everyone Should Open Minds and Eyes, The Holiday Party, and many more to encourage Miami students to be open to types of people.

Residence Hall Organization – This organization is in charge of all things in the residence halls—from coordinating dorm activities to creating dorm policies.  They oversee each residence hall council that is elected by the members of the dorm.

Oxford Tenants Organization – To help the students living off-campus feel connected to Miami and the Oxford community, OTO works to teach students their rights and responsibilities as tenants.

Student Legal Services – This service provides quality and affordable legal advice and representation to students.

  1. The Legislative Branch – Filled with 25 on-campus representatives and 25 off-campus representatives, these students strive to create legislation that their constituents want.  The on-campus representatives bring students from the dorms, including three from sororities and one from the Residence Advisors.  For the off-campus representatives, one commuter and three fraternity students participate to add input from all areas of students.  Together, these 50 students make the Student Senate.  The Senate also plays an advisory role, submitting proposals to the University Senate (not to be confused with the Student Senate) and the Student Affairs Council for approval and implementation.

  1. The Judicial Branch - Student Court Justices serve as student advocates, informing students of their rights and responsibilities according to the handbook.  In addition, they serve as jurors for those students "on trial" for non-suspendable disciplinary cases. Student Court is the final interpreter of the ASG Constitution and Bylaws, which means that they hear cases brought against the Student Senate or Executive offices.
